Prayer to St Genesius

Holy St Genesius,
martyr for Christ,
by the grace of the Holy Spirit
through your acting
you came to discover
the truth of the Christian faith.
In your first profession of that faith
you were baptized through the shedding
of your blood,
offering your life for the praise and glory
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Pray for those who dedicate their lives
to the theatrical and cinematic arts.
Like you may they find the presence
of the Lord in their work
and generously open their hearts
to his teaching,
living it in the midst of the challenges
and demands of their calling.
In this novena, I remember most especially…., commending him/her to your care.

Let us pray:
Eternal Father, in your love you call all men and women to come to know you and to share in your divine life. Through the intercession of your martyr, Genesius, who responded so generously to the grace of conversion, grant that the same grace may be given to those who as yet do not know you, and may be renewed in those who do. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Healing through the intercession of St Genesius

Lord Jesus,
you took pity on the blind Bartimaeus
and healed him;
you raised Lazarus from the dead
and freed Mary Magdalen from seven
devils to count her among your disciples.
You made the blind see, the deaf hear,
the dumb speak, the lame walk,
you cleansed lepers and cast out demons.
You preached the Good News to the poor
and bless those who are faithful to you.
Through the intercession of your
faithful martyr, Genesius,
grant your healing and consolation to the sick.
Give them the strength to carry their Cross
in union with you.
(We remember in particular _________.)
Help us to remain faithful to you in health
and in suffering, conformed to your Cross;
open our hearts to your will
so your grace may transform our lives.

Meditation
At the Last Supper, just before he offered up his life for us, Jesus spoke of the unity of vine and branches. We can understand this in two ways, both true: corporate and personal. It is corporate in that he speaks of the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, in which the members are united with their Head, Jesus himself, and if the Church and its members are to bear fruit, then it must remain in him. The personal sense of this teaching is that of Master and disciple, but also that of lovers. Jesus the Lover speaks to his Beloved – you. Jesus the gentle Lover, the attentive Lover, the Lover who laid down his life for his Beloved, asks his Beloved to remain with him, to live with him, to spend time with him. Our relationship with Jesus must become intimate, it must touch the depths of our souls and inspire an ardent longing us for him: the Song of Songs reveals such a longing. The lives of the saints also reveal this longing: as we hear of their spending hours in prayer we must realise that it was not a trial or endurance for them, but a joy: a divine wooing – the divine romance. St Teresa of Avila speaks of this as she teaches her spiritual children to enter into true prayer; John Henry Newman speaks of it when chose as his motto “Heart speaks to Heart”; St Genesius understood it and was strengthened by it as he went to his death with confidence and joy. If we want to know Christ Jesus, we must know that he is, ultimately, the Divine Lover, and we are the ones called into intimacy with him.

Optional Spiritual Exercise
Lovers spend time with each other, as they wile away the hours in each other’s company, they grow closer. On this Saturday of our novena we could spend some time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

Novena Prayers:

DAY SIX
“Jesus the Vine”

Scripture Reading

“I am the true Vine,
and my Father is the Vinedresser.
Every branch in me that bears no fruit
he cuts away,
and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes
to make it bear even more…

Remain in me, as I in you.
As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself,
unless it remains part of the vine,
neither can you unless you remain in me.
I am the Vine,
you are the branches…

I have loved you
just as the Father has loved me.
Remain in my love.”

(Jn 15:1-2, 4-5, 9)
